Ducks Unlimited Canada’s national fundraising race for wetland conservation is coming to Grande Prairie! This 5km fun run will start and finish at the Boreal Wetland Centre and directly supports DUC’s wetland conservation efforts.

BWC Field School

DUC will be running the first annual BWC Field School! In collaboration with the Grande Prairie Environmental Association, this event intends to grow awareness and understanding of wetland and environmental stewardship amongst practitioners and decision-makers.

2025 will include training on soil classificaiton, vegetation identification, and wetland identificaiton, classification, and delineation. Details to come!

May Plant Count

The annual May Plant Count is coming back to the Boreal Wetland Centre. Hosted by the Alberta Native Plant Council and Nature Alberta, this event counts flowering plant species at the BWC as part of a long term research project looking at plant phenology (i.e., how soon do the plants flower year over year compared to climate data).

This is a public event open to experts and beginners alike! Whether your a serious botanist or just enjoy walking and looking at plants, it is open to everyone. For more information, please contact Trevor Floreani.

International Museum Day at the BWC!

The Boreal Wetland Centre will be participating in the Interntaional Museum Day festivities being organized by the City of Grande Prairie! Be sure to stop by the Boreal Wetland Centre for a scavenger hunt, free cupcakes, and a walk through the forest to discuss wetlands and biodiversity.

Walk through the Forest

The Grande Prairie and Area Environmental Sciences Educational Society are hosting their annual Walk through the Forest event! This 3-day event takes Grade 6 six students from across the Peace Region through the Boreal Wetland Centre to learn a variety of subjects including forestry practices, wetlands, airsheds, noxious weeds, and urban forests.

Grande Prairie Envirothon Competition Summit

As St. John Paul High School students will be competing in the annual Envirothon competition on May 7-9, 2025 in Vermilion this year, the BWC will be hosting their Envirothon team with three local discipline specialists to help them prepare for the competition through conversation, student driven questions, and/or presentations.

The County of Grande Prairie will be hosting a workshop at Evergreen Park with certified arborist and CEO of ATTS Group Inc. Toso Bozic, including a field session at the BWC! The workshop will include discussion on site preparation, tree planting, pruning, pest ID, care and maintenance, and more.

Women in Outdoor Careers Summit Program

Inside Education invites you to bring female students from Grades 8 -12 for this one-day experiential learning event with local experts to explore career opportunities in various sectors including wildlife, water, energy, forestry, and more!

These no-cost experiences are fully facilitated by Inside Education and will include workshops and presentations by expert guests and bus transportation to each site. Your students will:

  • Learn from local experts such as wildlife biologists, agronomists, forest technicians, and more

  • Gain a better understanding of career and academic opportunities available to them

  • Have a hands-on learning experience that enriches the curriculum and meets CTF/CTS learning outcomes
