Event Agenda

Note: Participants will be broken up into two groups so everyone can participate in all of the workshops hosted.

Workshop Descriptions

Plant Identification Basics & Considerations
Alberta Forestry & Parks - Trevor Floreani & Dylan Fath

  • Presentation will begin with background of speakers, our roles, and interests related to plant ID

  • We will also discuss popular/more easy to use guides and sources that can help with fieldwork and desktop reviews

  • Basic ID skills (vegetative ID, floral ID, context/site identification to assist in ID and interpretation of ID) will be presented that will segue into presenting an overview of major plant families and their key similarities

  • Complementary ID skills (e.g. good photo taking for latter desk review/ID, composition assessment, % cover)

  • Weed ID hands-on (plant bingo and quadrat counts)

  • Brief "then what" section. Introduce plants as indicators (site determination, potential utilization, management concerns, plant composition as indicator of disturbance, reclamation considerations, landscape delineation). The latter aspect is meant to prep for wetland field component in afternoon

Soil Classification
Montrose Environmental Solutions Inc. - Alanna Dickson

  • Presentation abstract to come

Wetland Identification, Classification, and Delineation
Ducks Unlimited Canada - Rick Murray & Kailee Goertzen

As forested wetlands are widespread cross the Parkland and Boreal regions of Alberta, project proponents can only be confident about their proposed best management practices if they know where the wetland is and how it functions. During this session, participants will assess areas for indicators of hydric soils (prolonged wet soils), dominant hydrophytic vegetation (water loving vegetation) and other features (e.g., hydrology, landscape, etc.). By combining all these observations, we will determine the class of a wetland and where it begins and ends.
