Boreal Wetland Centre 2026 Year-To-Date
/The Boreal Wetland Centre (BWC) has been pleased to welcome students, community members, and partners throughout the first half of 2026. We are excited to post this update on the events, programs, and activities that have taken place at the BWC so far this year!
February 27
Youth Land-based Learning Winter Camp
In collaboration with the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre (GPFC), Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) hosted a land-based learning camp where youth had the chance to learn about winter survival, fire making, shelter building, and how wetlands work in the winter.
May 11-14
Walk Through the Forest
Organized by the Grande Prairie Environmental Sciences Education Society, this three-day event brought approximately 700 Grade 6 students and teachers to the BWC to learn about sustainable forest management, air and watersheds, invasive species, and wetland ecosystems. The event provided an opportunity to showcase the importance of wetlands and engage students in hands-on environmental learning.

Youth Land-based Learning Spring Camp
DUC and the GPFC delivered a spring land-based learning camp focused on land stewardship and restoration. Participants learned about land healing protocols and restoration best management practices while taking part in hands-on tree planting and willow staking to support ecosystem recovery at the BWC.
May 16
International Museum Day
As part of International Museum Day, the City of Grande Prairie coordinated a multi-site community event featuring the BWC, Grande Prairie Museum, Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum, Art Gallery of Grande Prairie, South Peace Regional Archives, and Veterans Memorial Gardens & Interpretive Centre with a complimentary shuttle service provided between locations. Visitors to the BWC participated in a scavenger hunt using our newly developed activity books.
May - June
Inside Education
Throughout May and June, Inside Education hosted over 1,000 students at the BWC. They used the BWC as an outdoor classroom, connecting students with the surrounding environment through curriculum-linked learning experiences and interactive activities. Inside Education programming will return in September and October.
June 18
GP Christian School Field Day
Mighty Peace Watershed Alliance and Ducks Unlimited Canada collaborated to organize a field day for GP Christian School at the BWC. The day included a plant ID scavenger hunt, aquatic insect identification, wetland soils, hydrology, and a hands-on demonstration showing how water moves through the landscape and connects wetlands, streams, and rivers.
July 22
Wembley Camp Field Day
The BWC was excited to host one of the Wembley Discovery Camps this year with support from the Mighty Peace Watershed Alliance. The day began with a tour of the BWC, where youth learned about demonstrations, wildlife, and boreal wetland plants. The afternoon included fun hands-on activities, including getting their hands dirty in the peat soil and learning more about the watershed. Despite the heat, the group brought great energy to the day!

August 21-22
Discover the Boreal Wetland Centre
This year, DUC is timing our Annual BioBlitz Activities to coincide with the County of Grande Prairie's 75th Anniversary festivities. This year's theme is a little different than previously, as we are dedicating these days to discovering the centre. We welcome recurring and new visitors to see what's happening on site. We will have two days of plant knowledge sessions, guided tours, and activities for the whole family!

New Demonstration
The Grande Prairie and Area Environmental Sciences Educational Society, along with volunteers, will install a new demonstration at the BWC!
Hint: a commonly used watercourse crossing used by Alberta’s forestry sector.
